Publication Charge Policy
Journal revenue sources and publication charge policy: FUP publishes journal articles under two separate business models. Diamond open access journals whose publication process is funded by payments that are made by societies, institutions or departments of University of Florence; open access articles whose publication is funded by payments that are made by authors, their institution or funding bodies, commonly known as Article Publishing Charges (APCs) Adjustments in FUP’s APC prices are under regular review and are subject to change. FUP sets APC prices based on the following criteria which are applied to open access articles only: journal’s quality, editorial and technical processes and competitive considerations. FUP grants waivers or discounts to those articles in gold open access journals for which all author groups are based in a country eligible for the Research4Life or in cases of genuine need.

OA Book revenue sources and publication charge policy: FUP is a not-for-profit institutional publisher running a mixed business models for covering its costs. Costs are covered by the institutional support of the hosting institution (i.e. Florence University), print revenues and Book Page Charge (BPC). In our business model institutional support and print revenues lower the cost of Book Processing Charges typically covered by a funder or institution.
FUP does not ask for submissions charges. However to cover the costs of open access publishing, after the conclusion of the peer review process, FUP applies book processing charges (BPCs) for the monograph and edited volume published. Publishing charges are not related in any way to the editorial decision-making process
FUP calculates the BPCs individually based on the manuscript and the requested services. When possible, we do not apply a Book Page Charge and we publish a book with an “embargo” period. After the embargo period of 18 months, the book is published in open access.
The book processing charge (BPC) for a monograph (or edited book) of 90,000 words (230 pages), with an open access digital edition, several eBook formats and a paperback print copy, plus 100 free copies for authors/research institution, is 2,500 € (excluding any applicable VAT or local sales tax).

Peer Review Process Link
Peer Review Policy
Journal peer review policy: Peer Review is the foundation of FUP editorial mission. It ensures the top-level quality and the integrity of the research published in our journals. Reviewing is a crucial activity for the scientific progress and the diffusion of the academic research outcomes. It requires significant time and effort, carrying great responsibilities for the reviewers. For these reasons we support the referees through all the stage of the reviewing process, recognizing their effort and contribution. We formulated a comprehensive guide to facilitate the reviewing activity and improve the quality of the manuscripts we publish. For more info about Peer Review see: https://journals.fupress.net/reviewers/what-is-peer-review/.

Book peer review policy: Publishing proposals (Submissions policy: https://fupress.com/submissions-policy) are submitted to the FUP Editorial Board (https://fupress.com/comitatoscientifico/consiglio-editoriale-fup/73) via the Director of the publishing house, who gives an initial editorial, technical and economic evaluation. The Editorial Board is composed of academics, spanning from the domain of human and social sciences to that of the natural, technological and biomedical sciences. Their task is to decide through an external peer-review process on the publication proposal by accepting it, refusing it, or asking the author to revise it. If a revision of the work is requested, the referees verify whether the Author has made the requested changes. If there are inconsistencies with what has been requested, the work is submitted again to the Editorial Board for a final evaluation. A new publishing proposal can be submitted by the author, or by a Scientific board already publishing a series in the FUP catalogue (https://www.fupress.com/comitatoscientifico). • The author’s proposal is evaluated by at least two reviewers through a single-blind peer-review process. • The publishing proposal submitted by a Scientific board must be accompanied by the report of two referees: at least one of the two must be external to the proposing Committee. The FUP Editorial board, however, has the last word on the publication decision. Every publishing proposal must be deliberated by the FUP Editorial Board; exceptionally, some works may not be subject to external refereeing process due to their specific nature. The FUP Editorial board’s members’ names, as well as the Editor-in-Chief’s and the FUP Series Scientific board’s members’, are published in the on-line catalogue and in every single book.
Initiatives
FUP strongly support Open Access publishing (gold and green OA) for books and journals. Very few OA books are published with an embargo period of maximum 18 months. After the embargo period the book is published in open access. For example: https://fupress.com/catalogo/come-un-ministro-per-la-cultura/4401
