We have now launched our Next 50% project, with a primer document that frames a fresh conversation about the future of open access.
The timing is critical. With a noticeable slowdown in open access publication growth (see Figure 2 in the primer), we need to collectively reassess what “open” truly means and chart a bolder and more comprehensive path forward.
This is not something OASPA will do in a vacuum: we are seeking inputs about our primer via an open survey which will accept responses until 11 July.
A range of stakeholders have been invited to three online workshops in June 2025 that will be facilitated by our project partner Research Consulting. These sessions will bring together OASPA publishing members with funders and investors in scholarly publishing.
While workshop space was limited to about 20 participants per session – far fewer than those who expressed interest – our survey offers everyone a chance to contribute meaningfully. All who are interested are welcome to respond, either as individuals or on behalf of your organisation.
Whether you participate via survey, workshop or both, your insights on the issues outlined in our primer are invaluable. If you would rather have a direct conversation with OASPA staff then we welcome this as well, please get in touch with David or Malavika at OASPA.
We will keep reporting openly on the progress of this project – sign up to make sure you receive all future updates.
Thank you for helping shape the future of open access.
